Tom McCarthy doesn't know when to shut up

I have been a loyal Philadelphia Phillies fan since 1993, listening to Harry Kalas' broadcasts and taking for granted his ability to broadcast in a way that let the games tell their own story.  He was a master of knowing when to be quiet and just watch the game.  He was a fan of the players, the players were a fan of him, and he was always focused on the game.  He was a treasure that Philadelphia continues to miss.
Then comes along Tom McCarthy, nowhere in the same realm as Harry Kalas.  He took the reigns the day that Harry Kalas passed away in Washington, broadcasting the game like business as usual.  I vividly remember that game;  Tom McCarthy seemed in high spirits about the passing of Kalas, like he was happy about his fortunate promotion.  That day bothered me, and still bothers me to this day.
I guess you could say that I haven't liked Tom McCarthy from the start, that the Mets sent him packing and he returned to Philadelphia as an outfield correspondent before his eventual promotion as broadcaster.  Even as an outfield correspondent he appeared uneducated on the sport of baseball.  Many of times he would talk before he would think, and I remember a time that Harry Kalas had to correct one of his comments.  He seemed "wet behind the ears," in my opinion.
Now the Phillies have sellouts every night, and Tom McCarthy is SELL SELL SELL $$$.  Every night he talks about the promotions like it's the main event.  His commentary during what I believe are important times in the game is simply annoying.  He asks really ignorant questions.  He gets excited about certain things that need no excitement.  I once heard a person say this about Tom McCarthy.  He said "baseball is a sport to sipped, not guzzled."   I agree strongly with that statement, and I believe Tom McCarthy has nothing to contribute to the Philadelphia Phillies.  He has done good work in broadcasting basketball, especially Atlantic 10 games, but with the Phillies I believe he has become a talking head.  He simply enjoys listening to the sound of his voice.  The only problem, is that we don't.  I'm kindly asking as a true Philadelphia Phillies fan that Tom McCarthy be fired.

  1. He laughs at Wheeler's jokes, never shuts up. Please remove the delay from the radio broadcast---Frantzke? is a real pro, and most Phillie fans would prefer him over McCarthy.

I noticed that the radio talk-show hosts do not criticize him, as he is a "nice guy". Embarrassing...

  3. Tonight July 20, 2012 was one of the worst i saw...an important game for the phillies to see if they could crawl back into the playoff race...t-mac and wheels (but honestly it was mostly McCarthy --i think even Wheeler would stick with talking baseball if not for T-mac) talked about every inane, pointless, distracting, promotional, vanilla, gag-reflex-causing topic BUT the baseball game....the absolute worst ...a mcdonald's ice cream smoothie, the size of two fans' heads (really!), the phanatic, and an upcoming tim mccarver hall of fame induction (nice enough topic but t-mac already wore out my patience by then ) were just a few of the topics T-Mac focused on INSTEAD of the live baseball game on the field ....still brutal in 2012-he's not getting better, he's getting much worse ...

  4. Generichuman I watched last nights game too. I'm beginning to enjoy Matthews' sarcasm towards McCarthy. I don't think he can stand him either. There were several close plays at first as I'm sure you remember. For one of them McCarthy said he must've been out by half a step, and Matthews sarcastically replied, "half a step?" The play was bang bang, call could have gone either way, much closer than half a step. Another example of the 'talking head' talking without thinking.

  5. Thanks,Dave, for re-signing this blabbermouth. We watch the games now with the sound on Mute.Guess what-we miss the constant sales pitches between the actual ones, He is not bad for regional stuff like college sports that need generic, bot he is absolutely the worst play by play baseball announcer I have encountered in over 50 years of following the team. The babbling inanity, that forced cackle...say what you might about the recent firings,a)Wheeler and Sarge were at least watching the game and b)Phils failed to complete the last third of the clean-up.
